Just Ask Raj – Your Guide to Getting Help

From Raj – Welcome to This Page (And Why I Say “Oho Ho Ho Ho!”)

Arre bhai, my name is Raj. People know me as the man with the laugh—“Oho Ho Ho Ho!” Why do I say that? Because life has thrown me so many shocks, if I didn’t laugh, I’d cry enough to flood the Thames. Gas bill? Oho Ho Ho Ho! Bus fare more than my dinner? Oho Ho Ho Ho! That’s how I survived—by laughing at the madness.

I came to this country in 1964, thinking the streets were paved with gold. Hai Ram, the only gold I saw was in someone’s teeth at the factory! I worked in sweatshops, breathed leather dust until my lungs gave up, and faced racism that didn’t whisper—it shouted in my face. Later, I lost my wife, then my health, and finally my home. Yes, I became homeless. One day I had a roof, the next I was sleeping on benches where even pigeons were saying, “Move over, bhai.”

But I’m still here. And I’m here for you. Because I know how hard it gets—when life knocks you down and then steps on your hand for good measure.

That’s why this page exists: to make life a little easier.

Here, you’ll find help you need when life feels impossible:
✅ Food banks & free meals
✅ Housing & homelessness support
✅ Money-saving tips & benefits advice
✅ Health & mental well-being
✅ Immigration help for migrants, refugees & overstayers
✅ Safety for women, families, and children
✅ And even how to have fun on a budget!

And if you think, “Raj, you missed something important,” then WhatsApp me and I’ll try to add it. This isn’t just a page. It’s a lifeline—for you, for me, for all of us.

So when things look dark, when the prices make you dizzy, just take a deep breath and say it with me:
“Oho Ho Ho Ho! Let’s find a way.”

‘The Help We Need’

When life gets hard—and believe me, I know what hard looks like—you start to realise what really matters. Not big dreams, not fancy things, but simple things: food, a roof over your head, someone to talk to, a little hope when everything feels dark.

I’ve had days when I didn’t know where my next meal was coming from. Nights when I slept in places no human should sleep. Times when I coughed blood and thought, “Hai Ram, is this it?” I’ve been at rock bottom, and I wouldn’t wish it on anyone.

That’s why I thought this section was important. ‘The Help We Need’ is here for you—for all of us. Because no matter who you are, life will throw something at you: illness, money troubles, loneliness, loss. And when that happens, you need to know where to turn.

Here, you’ll find things that can help when life feels bleak—places for food, housing advice, mental health support, benefits help, and more. And if something is missing? Or you think, “Arre Raj, why isn’t this on the list?” then just WhatsApp me. Tell me what you need, and we’ll try to make it happen.

We are stronger when we help each other. So let’s make this not just a section in a booklet, but a lifeline for anyone who needs it.

Food Banks & Food Kitchens in the Area

When I came to this country, there were days I didn’t eat. I would skip meals just to send money back home to my family. I know what hunger feels like. I know what it’s like to stand in the cold with an empty stomach and no idea where your next meal is coming from.

That’s why I want to tell you about something important. No one should have to go hungry. In our community, there are places where you can find food and support—where you are treated with dignity, not judgment.

Below is a list of food banks and food kitchens in East London. These are safe spaces where you can get a hot meal or a bag of essentials for yourself and your family. If you are struggling, please don’t suffer in silence. These services are here for you—because we all deserve to eat and live with respect.

Remember: Asking for help is not weakness. It’s strength. We’ve all been there at some point—including me. Let Blossom Groups help you find the support you need.

Martyn Lewis Money Saving Expert

From Raj – Oho Ho Ho Ho! Save That Money

Arre bhai, let me tell you something—money worries can break your sleep faster than bad tea. I’ve been there: counting pennies, wondering if I can stretch £10 for the week. When life gets tough, every pound matters.

That’s why I want to share something that has helped so many people: Martin Lewis’s Money Saving Expert website. This man is like a messiah for mazdoor log (a savior for working people). He shows you how to cut bills, grab the cheapest deals, and even claim refunds you didn’t know you were owed!

Think of it as your online survival kit for these crazy times. Gas bills too high? Oho Ho Ho Ho! He’s got tips for that. Credit cards charging too much? Oho Ho Ho Ho! He’ll show you the loopholes. Even freebies—yes, free stuff.

But don’t worry, I’ve got something for you. My guide to getting cheap tickets, places where children can eat free, enjoy activities, and have days out—because fun shouldn’t only belong to rich people.

Raj’s Guide to Surviving Homelessness in London (And Finding the Help You Need)

Arre bhai, let me tell you something: being homeless is no Bollywood dream sequence. There’s no singing under the stars when you’re shivering on a bench at 2 AM. It’s cold, it’s lonely, and it’s a punch in the gut every single day.

I’ve been there. One day you have a roof, the next day you’re sharing a park bench with pigeons—and let me tell you, those pigeons don’t share their food. Oho Ho Ho Ho!

Here’s what I learned the hard way (so you don’t have to):

1. Where to Sleep (Legally and Safely)

Don’t risk your life sleeping under bridges or in dark alleys. London has night shelters and hostels where you can stay warm and safe.

  • StreetLink – Report your situation and get connected to local support.
    📞 Call 0300 500 0914

  • Shelter – Housing and emergency advice.
    📞 Helpline: 0808 800 4444

  • The Passage – Central London day centre with food, showers, and advice.
    📍 St Vincent’s Centre, Westminster

2. Where to Eat (Free or Cheap)

Being hungry in London is no joke—Pret sandwiches cost more than my first week’s wages! But there’s hope:

  • Food Banks & Food Kitchens – Use a referral or contact local groups via Blossom on this page.

  • The Felix Project – Rescued food delivered to community kitchens.

(We’ll list full food bank details in the next section.)

3. Keep Your Documents Safe

Passports, IDs—guard them like gold. Without them, getting help is ten times harder. If you lose them, go straight to Citizens Advice for guidance:

4. Mental Health Matters

Homelessness isn’t just about losing a roof—it messes with your head. Talk to someone:

5. Stay Connected

I know—phone credit is expensive. But having a working phone can be the difference between getting help or staying stuck. Free SIMs are sometimes available through day centres like Crisis and St Mungo’s.

6. Oho Ho Ho Ho – My Golden Rule

When life throws you on the street, don’t let it break you. Use every service, every bit of help. Ask questions, don’t be shy. Pride won’t keep you warm, but a shelter will. And remember:
If the system makes you feel small, laugh louder: Oho Ho Ho Ho!

Raj’s Tip: Where to Wash, Shave & Feel Human Again

Arre bhai, being homeless is not just about finding food and a place to sleep—it’s about dignity. After a few days on the street, you don’t feel like yourself. You want a bath, a shave, maybe even smell nicer than a dustbin. Oho Ho Ho Ho!

Here are some places in London where you can freshen up:

The Passage (Victoria)

  • Showers, shaving kits, and clean clothes.
    📍 St Vincent’s Centre, Carlisle Place, SW1P 1NL

Support for Women Who Are Homeless

Arre behno (sisters), being homeless is tough for anyone, but for women, it’s a whole different fight. Safety, dignity, and privacy become even harder to find. I’ve seen it—and it breaks my heart. No woman should have to choose between sleeping on the street or staying somewhere unsafe.

But listen, you’re not alone. There are places just for you—safe spaces where you can get support, a warm bed, and a bit of peace. Here’s where to start:

1. Women-Only Night Shelters & Refuges

  • The Marylebone Project
Safe space for women, with showers, beds, and support services.
    📍 London NW1
    👉 www.maryleboneproject.org.uk

2. Health & Hygiene for Women

3. Women’s Day Centres

  • The Passage (Victoria) – Women’s sessions for showers, clothes, and support.

4. Raj’s Tip

If you feel unsafe, don’t stay silent. Ask for help—there are services that will move mountains to keep you safe. Pride won’t protect you, but these places will. And remember, even in the darkest time, say it with me:
“Oho Ho Ho Ho! I will survive this.”

But you are NOT invisible. Help is out there—and I’m here to show you where to start.

Arre behno (and bhaiyo too), listen to me carefully: nobody—nobody—has the right to hurt you. Not with words, not with fists, not in any way. If you are facing domestic violence, please believe me when I say this: it is not your fault. You deserve safety, dignity, and peace.

I know leaving is hard—especially when you’ve got kids, money worries, or you’re scared of what people will say. Oho Ho Ho Ho, I’ve seen too many women (and men) stay silent because of shame. Forget shame—your life matters more than someone else’s opinion.

Modern Slavery – It’s Real, and It’s Here

Raj’s Guide: Modern Slavery – It’s Real, and It’s Here

Arre bhai, when you hear “slavery,” you think of history books, old films, and the past. But let me tell you something—it didn’t end. It just changed its clothes. Modern slavery is happening right now in London, in our boroughs, even on our streets.

What is modern slavery?
It’s when someone controls you and takes away your freedom for their gain. They may force you to work long hours for little or no pay. They might take your passport, threaten you, or stop you from leaving. Sometimes they trap you with debt or lies about “helping” you.

It can happen anywhere—factories, car washes, construction sites, restaurants, nail bars, and even private homes. I’ve seen it myself in sweatshops back in the day. People working like machines, scared to speak, treated worse than animals. Oho Ho Ho Ho, this is not life, it’s a prison without bars.

Signs You or Someone You Know Might Be a Victim

  • You’re not allowed to leave your job.

  • Someone else keeps your passport or ID.

  • You work long hours for little or no pay.

  • You’re threatened or controlled.

  • You live where you work in bad conditions.

  • You feel trapped, scared, or watched.

If this sounds like your situation—or someone you know—please remember:
This is not your fault. And you are not alone.

Raj’s Words for You

Modern slavery is not “their problem”—it’s our problem. These criminals prey on the vulnerable. But remember: asking for help is not weakness—it’s courage. If you feel trapped, whisper to someone, send a message, make that call. Freedom is your right.

And if life feels too heavy, say it with me:
“Oho Ho Ho Ho! I will be free.”

Your Right to Register with a GP

From Raj – Oho Ho Ho Ho! Let’s Talk Wages

Arre bhai, let me tell you something about this minimum wage business. Back in my day, I worked for £7 a week. SEVEN POUNDS. And now? The rates have gone up, but life is still expensive like a Bollywood wedding.

Here’s the truth for 2025:

  • National Minimum Wage (21+)£12.21 per hour (the law says your boss MUST pay this at least).

  • If you’re younger:

    • 18–20 years: £10.00 per hour

    • Under 18: £7.55 per hour

    • Apprentices: £7.55 per hour

Sounds good, right? Oho Ho Ho Ho! Don’t celebrate yet. Because living in London on that? It’s like trying to fill a bucket with holes.

That’s why there’s something called the London Living Wage—it’s £13.85 per hour. This is not a law, but good employers pay it because they know rent, bills, and even a plate of biryani cost more here than in the rest of the UK.

Why Should You Care?

Because every extra pound matters. One extra pound an hour is an extra £35 a week, which is £1,400 a year. That’s the difference between buying groceries without sweating and saying, “Bhai, half onion curry again tonight.”

Raj’s Golden Tip

  • Check your payslip! If you’re getting less than £12.21, your boss is breaking the law.

  • Use the Gov Check Your Pay Tool:

  • And if your boss acts clever, message me on WhatsApp. I’ll help you sort it out.

Because, bhai, minimum wage is not charity—it’s your RIGHT. And if life shocks you when you see your pay, just say:
“Oho Ho Ho Ho! Time to check my payslip!”

Refugee Advice

Overstayers

From Raj – Oho Ho Ho Ho! Let’s Talk About Overstaying

Arre bhai, let’s be honest. Immigration rules in this country? They’re like a 3-hour Bollywood movie—too many twists, too much drama, and you can’t fast-forward. And sometimes, before you know it, your visa expires. Now you’re thinking: “Hai Ram, what do I do?!”

Listen carefully: you are not a criminal for overstaying—but you need to act fast.

What Does “Overstayer” Mean?

It means your visa or leave to remain has ended, and you haven’t renewed or left the UK. Staying without permission can cause big problems:

  • No legal right to work or rent.

  • No access to most benefits.

  • Risk of detention or being removed.

But don’t panic. There is help. Oho Ho Ho Ho! Even I would get confused with these rules.

What You Should Do If You’re an Overstayer

1. Get Legal Advice Immediately

  • Don’t ignore it. There may be ways to fix your status.

  • Contact free or low-cost immigration advice:

2. Check If You Can Apply to Stay

You might still have options:

  • Human Rights Applications (if you have family here).

  • 10-Year Long Residence Route.

  • Exceptional Circumstances (illness, children, risk in your home country).

  • Speak to a lawyer—never guess!

3. Don’t Trust Scammers

Some people will take your money and vanish. Only use registered advisers. Check them here:

Raj’s Words for You

You’ve come this far—don’t give up now. Immigration rules are tough, but there’s always a way. Just don’t hide. Ask for help. And when the stress makes your head spin, say it with me:
“Oho Ho Ho Ho! I will find a way.”

Came here by Boat

Arre bhai, first let me say this: if you came here by boat, through danger and risk, you are braver than you know. No one makes that journey for fun—it’s because home became a war zone or a death trap. So, respect to you.

But now you’re here, and you’re probably thinking:
“What do I do? Who do I talk to? Will they send me back?”
Don’t panic. Let me guide you.

First Things First: Claim Asylum

  • If you arrived in the UK without a visa, you must claim asylum as soon as possible.

  • Call the Asylum Intake Unit or tell Border Force at the port.

You’ll need to explain why you left your country and why it’s not safe to go back.

What Happens After You Claim?

  • You will get an Application Registration Card (ARC) – keep it safe.

  • You can apply for asylum support (housing and money while you wait for a decision).

  • You cannot work until your claim is approved, but you will get basic support.

Raj’s Words for You

Don’t let the headlines fool you. You are not “illegal.” You are human. And humans have the right to safety. Britain can be cold—not just the weather, but the system too—but there are people who care. Start with these steps, and if you’re lost, call me.

And when life feels too heavy, say it with me:
“Oho Ho Ho Ho! I’ve survived worse—I will survive this.”
